Training courses for personal assistants of people with disabilities at DAS Târgu Mureș
Directorate of Social Assistance Targu Mures together with PFA Kacso K. Erika and the National Red Cross Society of Romania - Mureș Branch, organised for 2 weeks training and personal development courses to prepare personal assistants to meet the physical, psychological and social needs of the disabled person under their care and to fulfil the legal obligations of the personal assistant and the employing institution. These courses also included 2 modules, namely hygiene and first aid.
The themes addressed through interactive-participative techniques and methods are:
- Providing primary care;
- Providing food and nutrition for the beneficiary;
- Adapting the environment to the needs of the beneficiary: providing a personalised space, according to the needs and particularities of the beneficiary;
- Monitoring the health of the severely disabled person;
- Communication between the personal assistant and the disabled person;
- Assisting the activity and participation of the severely disabled person in family and community: assisting the severely disabled person in a variety of activities necessary for his/her personality development, recovery, integration into the community, leisure time in accordance with his/her particularities and preferences;
- Assisting school integration and lifelong learning;
- Assisting the professional integration of severely disabled people;
- Monitoring the rights of people with disabilities;
- General notions of hygiene: air, water, food, clothing, housing, individual, patient, bed and its annexes;
- Specific and technical rules of care for the severely disabled;
- First aid in case of cardiac arrest, choking, haemorrhage, fainting or loss of consciousness.
In addition to the above-mentioned themes, the refresher programme also included elements that will develop participants' competences and skills such as teamwork, stress and time management at work, equal opportunities and anti-discrimination.
According to the satisfaction questionnaires, more than 85% out of the total number of trainees were overall very satisfied (65%) and satisfied (21%) with the course organised.
