Delegation from Berlin on a working visit to the Târgu Mureș Social Assistance Department
A delegation of social work representatives from Berlin - the Berlin City Mission Association - paid a working visit to the Municipality of Targu Mures in order to better understand the profile of social service beneficiaries from Romania and to increase the capacity for collaboration between the social services run by their organisation and Romanian institutions/organisations, especially in the field of social assistance for homeless people.
"On Thursday 27 July 2023, we had the pleasure of having as guests a group of social work professionals from an NGO in Berlin. They came to Targu Mures as part of a project that the Berlin City Mission Association is running to understand the social assistance system for vulnerable groups in Romania, especially people who are homeless or living in makeshift housing. The delegation visited the headquarters of the Târgu Mureș Social Assistance Directorate and the "Night Shelter" Social Service of the institution. They could also see the work of some NGOs in the social field, namely: Transylvanian Alpha Foundation (Alpha Community Centre), Divers Association, Caritas Association and Solidaris Association. We hope that this visit will be the basis of a future collaboration in which both the social services from Targu Mures and Berlin will be able to inform each other and collaborate with regard to the beneficiaries - Romanian citizens, in everything that means the development of social services in the area of competence of each. We want to eliminate homelessness, including improvised housing, but for this to be possible, we need improved public policies and allocated funds. At the moment, there are about 5,000 homeless people in Berlin, and their integration is quite difficult due to language, education and work skills difficulties. At the same time, the measures taken by each side for the social, educational and professional integration of refugees from the area of armed conflict in Ukraine were also discussed." DAS Târgu Mureș representatives said.
Both sides gave a brief presentation of their own social work and social services and answered questions raised by the other side, the main purpose of the Berlin City Mission delegation's visit being to expand cooperation in several areas, both for children and adults from disadvantaged groups and for homeless people, with a view to their social integration in their country of origin.
