Information campaign on the obligations of parents who work abroad
An information campaign on the protection of children with parents working abroad was held today at the headquarters of the Social Assistance Department of Targu Mures, supported by Save the Children Mures Branch. The meeting was attended by both parents and legal representatives in the care of children who have one or both parents abroad.
The objective of the campaign: to inform parents/legal representatives about their legal obligations before going to work abroad and to raise awareness of the risks associated with their absence.
Children left at home are deprived of the affection and direct supervision of their parents, often facing emotional, social and educational difficulties. The absence of a parent or legal guardian can limit children's access to health services, education and social benefits essential for their development.
It is very important for all parents who intend to go abroad to work to be aware that they have to fulfil the procedure for delegating parental authority. The purpose of this is to appoint a legal representative for the child during the absence of the parents. A legal representative means that these children are legally in someone's responsibility, that they can go to a doctor when they need to, that they can enrol at school, that they can go to camps, etc.
The procedure involves notifying the Targu Mures Social Welfare Department at least 40 days before leaving the country, and then having the delegation of authority analysed and approved by a judge.
DAS Târgu Mureș and Save the Children Mureș Branch offer ongoing counselling to parents who go abroad, as well as to persons to whom parental authority has been delegated, and specialised services for affected children.
